DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

NORTHERN SARDINIA SMALL GROUP TOUR TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: WELCOME TO ALGHERO

Welcome to Northern Sardinia!Arrive at Alghero airport and travel to the town centre for four nights stay in the picturesque Catalan seaside town of ALGHERO at the central “CARLOS V HOTEL” or similar.At 6.00 pm meet your tour director for a welcome drink followed by dinner in a local restaurant.Overnight in ALGHERO.

Day 2: CATALAN ALGHERO & HOME-HOSTED LUNCH 

Following the Catalan-Aragonese invasion of Sardinia, the medieval fortified seaside town of ALGHERO underwent total Hispanicization and became known as “little Barcelona”.The lively piazza is fitted with shops and restaurants.Our guided tour takes you through the labyrintine alleys of the remarkably preserved old town,defended by robust walls and four bastions dedicated to famous explorers.Continue to the hills of Alghero where meet a Sardinian family in their farmhouse for a delicious home-hosted lunch.Overnight in ALGHERO.

Day 3: CHARMING BOSA, MALVASIA WINE & TINNURA MURALS

This morning we drive to the delightful pastel colored houses town of BOSA located on a green valley at the foot of a mountainous area dominated by the CASTELLO DEI MALASPINA, on the right bank of the Temo river, the only navigable one in Sardinia. This fascinating town is famous for its artisan tradition of gold-filigree jewelry and lace-making.Upon arrival we visit a local wine shop for a tasting of their sweet wine MALVASIA,Sardinia’s highest-quality,then have free time in the town for lunch and to explore on your own.We complete the day with a photo stop in the mural town of TINNURA. Here, the streets are evocative with paved squares housing statues of Sardinian artists and colourful murals painted on houses, depicting the moments of traditional life.Tonight, you’ll eat like a local with a pizza by meter dinner in a popular restaurant.Overnight in ALGHERO.

Day 4: SASSARI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM,SACCARGIA & NURAGHE SANTU ANTINE

Today’s tour takes you to Sardinia’s second most important city commercially,politically and culturally, SASSARI where we will visit the stunning ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM featuring various periods of Sardinian civilizations,from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Arrowheads,nuraghic bronze statuettes,amphoras,furnishings and jewels are on display in chronological order.Continue to examining the impressive NURAGHE SANTU ANTINE,the greatest and best preserved in the Valley of the Nuraghi, built between the 16th and the 9th century BCE, famous for its 17-metre high tower protected by three bastions.On the way back to Alghero, we will stop at the Church of the Holy Trinity of SACCARGIA, the major Medieval church in the island.Overnight in ALGHERO.

Day 5: MEDIEVAL CASTELSARDO, CORK REGION & OLBIA

After breakfast we travel to the enchanting medieval village of CASTELSARDO,perched on a volcanic headland,dominated by the CASTLE Castelsardo’s main attraction, dating back to 1102 and home to a museum of basket weaving, which remains an integral local craft. One of the highlights of the castle is its terrace, with dramatic views of the town, the coast, and towards Corsica.After an included lunch in a local restaurant,we’ll learn about the fascinating production of SARDINIAN CORK techniques and the many uses of this versatile material.We spend the last five nights in the charming town of OLBIA staying in a family boutique hotel “LOCANDA DEL CONTE MAMELI” or similar.Dinner tonight is on your own.Overnight stay in OLBIA

Day 6: DELIGHTS OF COSTA SMERALDA

This morning drive takes you to visit the COSTA SMERALDA, or Emerald Coas.This 20-kilometre stretch of reclaimed and tastefully developed coastline has grown to become one of the world’s most celebrated holiday playgrounds and a haven to the Mediterranean’s sailing and private yacht community.As we head off to explore, we’ll discover beautiful white-sand beaches, idyllic remote bays and sublime hotels. It’s no wonder this glamorous destination is a magnet for the rich and famous.Enjoy some time to yourself with a stroll around PORTO CERVO‘s pretty marina, where there’s sure to be plenty of elegant yachts moored.The Piazzetta is another great place to head. It’s lined with designer boutiques, cafés, bars and restaurants, so maybe sit with a refreshing drink and indulge in a spot of people-watching.Dinner is included this evening in a local restaurant.Overnight in OLBIA

Day 7: SAN PANTALEO,VERMENTINO WINERY & ARZACHENA ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURES

We’re going to head to the artists’ village of SAN PANTALEO today and get an authentic glimpse of rural Sardinian life.It is one of the prettiest on the island and a joy to explore. It’s set around a picturesque piazza where you can browse artisan shops and craft stalls, and watch local artists at work.Winemaking is an important part of the local economy, so we visit a family-owned wine estate for a tour of the vineyards, wine tasting and light lunch.End the day in ARZACHENA to visit a Nuragic funerary monument dating from the Bronze Age.The site consists of a stele, stone megaliths and a gallery grave, and is one of the larger Nuragic Giants’ graves on the island.Dinner is on your own this evening.Overnight in OLBIA

Day 8: THE COLORS OF LA MADDALENA ISLANDS & GARIBALDI MUSEUM

LA MADDALENA is the name of the principal island of an archipelago off the north-eastern tip of Sardinia. The archipelago is also known as La Maddalena, and consists of over sixty islands, islets and rocks. In the past the islands have been important strategic naval and military bases; now they are an attractive holiday destination. The most famous attractions are the beautiful unspoiled beaches, the blue seas and the final home of Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi, on the ISLAND OF CAPRERA.Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of the Risorgimento, was so taken with this unpromising lump of arid rock and scrub that he bought a chunk of the island and built a house there, to which he brought his 40-years-younger last wife, and where he died.Overnight stay in OLBIA

Day 9: COOKING CLASS EXPERIENCE-LIVE AS A LOCAL!!

Celebrate your last day in Northern Sardinia in the house of a Sardinia family for HANDS-ON-COOKING experience accompanied by a light lunch.Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the lovely town of Olbia.In the evening celebrate your Sardinian adventure with an “Arrivederci dinner” sharing travel memories and toasting new friends.Overnight stay in OLBIA
